I am currently in college but i am finding that I am just aimlessly wondering around my college life, but I am very interested in the commercial real estate field. however I know that to get a brokers license it is not required to have a degree one just needs to have a certain amount of hours and past the needed tests. Although I do imagine with this brokerage firms might not hire someone because they do not have the degree of the four year college. I would like to get some insight if the commercial real estate brokers require or want a four year degree. any help would be great!

    I don’t know how many states this is true in but some require that you have a Bachelors in order to sell real estate.

    I have never known commercial real estate that has even tried for a college degree.

    Just a thought. If you want to work with Commercial real estate, you would be in close contact with major Corporations (and most people there would have degrees themselves) and they would want to know they are in good hands and with someone who REALLY goes by the books and who knows what they are doing. It may be a good idea to stick with school if you can. It will pay off in the long run. At least you are in right now. STAY IN SCHOOL!

    he still managed to bring in the cash or at least it looks like it since he has a vintage mercedes convertable and a brand new bmw

    the ability to determine the fair market value of a piece of property is critical to your success in the real estate field.

    That is particularly true in commercial real estate.

    I recommend that you contact The Appraisal Institute and take all of the classroom training that is offered by The Appraisal Institute.

    Then go to work as a trainee for a firm that is owned by a Member of The Appraisal Institute, and does a lot of commercial appraisal.

    Get your training and experience for the MAI designation.

    Once you have achieved the MAI designation you will know far more about valuation of commercial buildings than 99% of the real estate brokers out there.

    You will be able to write your own ticket. You will have far more expertise than the other brokers in the field.

  • Philly Broker:

    Although a college degree is not required for licensure and to work for residential brokerages, many commercial brokerages will want or require you to have a four year college degree.

    It will vary from company to company, the type of commercial business you would be involved in, and how much relevent experience you have.

    An example for each –

    1. The Company: A very large organization like CB Richard Ellis will most likely require you to have a degree, whereas, a small local brokerage may not.

    2. Type of Commercial Real Estate: A broker involved in investment sales would probably need a degree (in finance or accounting) more than some other commercial brokerage fields.

    3. Experience: A firm may hire a new broker with 10 years of sales experience and no degree over a guy with no sales experience and a degree.

    Ultimately, there’s no simple yes or no answer – but it sure would improve your odds if you did.
